Welcome to our NEW web site, NEW literacy blog, NEW programs and so much more…

LITERACY CENTER NEWS

WELCOME

As we head deeper into our 20th Anniversary Year, so much is unfolding! New educational programs! New fundraising events!  A new logo! And a brand-new website, designed for us by Antelope Web as a result of its Marketing Makeover competition this past Winter and The Literacy Center of Milford’s second-place win! We LOVE our new website, and hope you will love it too!  So take a few minutes to navigate our new site, and learn more about the Center and its offerings.  Embedded in the new website is the LITERACYBLOG, which will be providing you with news on the Center’s happenings in real-time!  It replaces our previous and long-running E-NEWSLETTER.

This year we also had the opportunity to work with independent consultant Liz Martin on the new logo design, as well as creative marketing strategies.  So we’d like to thank Liz, as well as Greyson Schwing and his staff at Antelope Web for all their hard work and dedication in helping promote the Center and its educational offerings to our community.

We’re also excited about adding two NEW Computer education classes this year, thanks to the DeLuca Foundation and its generosity! We also give thanks to instructor and LCoM Board Member Ivan Tirado for his tutelage!  Now is a great time to sign up for our expanding programs or to become a volunteer.  We always need YOUR help as a tutor, or a reader or to work on a committee for one of our new and exciting fundraisers —  the Neon Nightrun  challenge (on July 12) and our first-ever Masquerade Ball (on October 17).  These events are being planned in sync with our 20th Celebration, and should be great celebrations for all that we are accomplishing.  We hope you will join us.

So… WELCOME to our new LITERACYBLOG and Website!  We invite you to spend a bit of time here and get to know us better!

The Great Give 2014

THANK YOU for helping us raise $1,675!

The Great Give® 2014, an online community-wide giving event, took place for 36 non stop hours starting 8:00 am on May 6 and ending 8:00 pm on May 7.

giveGreater.org® is an online searchable database of nonprofit organizations serving Greater New Haven and the Lower Naugatuck Valley of Connecticut that was created by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven in 2010. The website has several goals: to increase the amount of giving to local nonprofit organizations and strengthen the nonprofit sector in the region by increasing visibility and transparency. Profiles of more than 300 nonprofits populate the site, providing information to donors about the needs and opportunities of the region, programs and services, governance, financials and community impact. Nonprofits are listed in one or more of eight categories.  Thank you to those of you who helped us climb the leaderboard.  See the results!

On December 14, 2012, Scarlett Lewis experienced something that no parent ever should: she lost her son Jesse in an act of unimaginable violence at Sandy Hook. Scarlett’s life changed forever, but this isn’t a story about a massacre. It’s a story about love and survival. How to choose love instead of anger, fear or hatred.

Inspired by the three words Jesse had scrawled on a chalkboard in their home: nurturing healing love… Scarlett took her first steps toward a new life.

This is Scarlett’s story of how choosing love is changing her life and how it could change our world.
