Using Show and Tell in the Beginning ESOL Classroom
Classroom, Purpose To help beginning ESOL students develop speaking skills with the use of Show and Tell.
Rationale Show and Tell, commonly used in childhood education, can be a unique way to help adult ESOL students develop their speaking and presentation skills. Show and Tell might also take on a deeper meaning for adult ESOL students who have traveled from their home country or who have moved frequently, says Sarah Lynn, a freelance teaching trainer, materials writer, and ESOL teacher with the Bridge Program at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. As students share personal information or objects during Show and Tell, it can help create connections in the classroom. You can use Show and Tell as a warm-up activity—or you can expand it so it becomes a fully developed classroom activity. Here is how you can use Show and Tell with students. The end of this article also includes ideas on expanding Show and Tell for use with higher-level ESOL and ABE students.
The Basic Activity 1. Ask students if they have heard of Show and Tell. Explain that it is a common activity used in children’s classrooms. Give an example yourself by coming to class with an object that you can briefly show and explain. 2. Encourage students to bring an object that has significance for them. If you need examples of the kinds of objects students can bring, here are some examples that Lynn shared. Read More in the Spring 2013 edition

The Literacy Center says good bye to Bob Elliot.
Bob Elliot has been a pre school reader at the YMCA since 2008. Weekly, he reads to 3 and 4 year old children. Bob likes reading the big books to the children, it helps keep their interest. “The children love listening to the stories and Bob is wonderful. Sometimes the kids help to hold up the big books.” says Susan Buglione from the YMCA. Bob and his wife will be moving to Baltimore, Maryland to be closer to their daughter. We wish the Elliot family all the best! Thank you Bob for being a GREAT Literacy Volunteer!
This year our pre school readers volunteered 300 hours at 12 school locations.
Are you a retired teacher or on your summer break? Interested in helping an adult student with their English or math skills? We are always looking for volunteers to help our students improve their grammar, speech, writing and math skills. If you would like to help, make an appointment today! 203-878-4800

The 4th Annaul Live to Learn Motorcycle Ride took place on Sunday, July 14 at the Orange Ale House. 80 bikers took off at 10 AM for a 70 mile journey to Redding, Ct and returned to OAH at 1:00 for an awesome lunch provided by Jim Hassenmeyer and the staff at Orange Ale House! Bikers collected letter tiles at stops along the route for the Scrabble Game. The Best Scrabble Player was Gail Evanko (right). The band, Rockbox entertained the crowd in the afternoon. Thank you to Steve Cooper, Gregeiger Company Unlimited, Inc and Studio 95 Photogaphix for the great pictures. To view pictures and media coverage, click here.
The Live to Learn Ride was in memory of a good friend to the Literacy Center, Ronnie Rome, who passed away last year in a tragic accident.
